Frequently Asked Questions:

WHO IS THE PROMOTER OF THESE SYNDICATES?

The promoter is Noel Kennard, of Christchurch. Noel has been involved in harness racing since the 1970s. Nowadays he is primarily involved in the breeding side of the industry. He owns broodmares and stallions and is also involved in the promotion and marketing of all the stallions that stand at Wai-Eyre Farm Stud in North Canterbury.

WHY THE MOVE TO SYNDICATION?

For many years Noel has been mindful of the declining ownership numbers in this industry. More recently he started to experience first-hand the enjoyment that the ownership of a racehorse brings, so he came up with a way of introducing other people to the same fun and excitement - syndicates were the answer.

ARE THERE ANY GUARANTEES OF FINANCIAL PROFITS?

No guarantees whatsoever. This is not to say that there are none, and won't be any - because there are many examples of syndicates that end up making profits for their members. But Noel wants to promote the involvement of racehorse ownership for the fun and enjoyment that it can bring, rather than make any financial promises, as they simply cannot be guaranteed. There are many things that can (and do) go wrong with horses - from something minor that requires a month's 'spell', right through to a major issue that curtails the horse's racing days altogether.

WHO ARE THESE SYNDICATES BEST SUITED TO?

They are for people who are currently involved in the industry or have been in the past, as well as those who may have seen harness racing and often wondered what it might be like to experience the joys of racehorse ownership - but never did anything about it because they thought it'd be too expensive. The goHarness Syndicates are the most affordable way to get involved that's ever been made possible to anyone and everyone.

WHY JOIN THESE SYNDICATES?

The answer's simple... they allow you to enjoy all the benefits of what racehorse ownership has to offer. The costs of racing a horse are such that it's out of reach for the vast majority of people, if they do it on their own. By being part of the goHarness Syndicates, racehorse ownership has finally become affordable to just about everybody in New Zealand.

WHERE DID THIS MULTIPLE-OWNERSHIP IDEA COME FROM?

HRNZ Representatives attended a World Trotting Conference in 2011 and saw that this concept had been introduced. The first example was in Sweden where they set up 16 syndicates, each containing 1000 people: shares in these 16 syndicates were sold out in less than a week

IF A SYNDICATE HORSE BECOMES A CHAMPION, WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS?

We've discussed this possible scenario, and decided that because the goHarness Syndicates are being promoted as running for approximately 24 months, then they should definitely terminate at the end of this two-year period. If a number of people wish to continue their association with the horse after any syndicate's expiry date, then they can put together a syndicate to buy it when it goes up for sale. This would have no detrimental effect on anyone's financial position. If this were the case and a number of the existing syndicate members wanted to continue with the horse, then they could buy the horse and run a new syndicate themselves - or employ Noel Kennard to run it for them. If an offer for the horse is received prior to the 24-month expiration date, this would not be entertained.

WILL THERE BE OTHER SYNDICATES IN THE FUTURE?

Yes, definitely. The first syndicate ('In It For Fun': Franco Harrison) proved highly popular and successful, and still has some way to go before its 24-month term is up. A second syndicate ('Trotting For Fun': Saratoga and the three 2-year-old fillies ) followed in its footsteps and has also been a winner. It's a different set-up to the first syndicate though, as it has ongoing payments and no expiry date - shares in 'Trotting For Fun' are still available. A third syndicate has been launched, owning and racing two horses at once, and planning is always underway for more syndicates in the future.
